Reference librarians at the South Carolina State Library are available to assist you Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except on state holidays.

You can contact us by phone, email, chat, and in-person.

  • Call the Information Desk at (803) 734-8026 for help with library cards, book checkouts, renewals, items on hold, or for research questions.
  • You can also Chat with a Librarian during regular library hours. There is a Chat window on this page and also on the bottom of the State Library's homepage.

Get a South Carolina State Library Card

SC residents 18 and over are eligible to apply for a free South Carolina State Library card. Please complete our online application form here. 

Your library card will be mailed to the address provided on the form once it is processed (Please allow 7-10 days to receive your card in the mail). Any questions you have may be directed to reference@statelibrary.sc.gov.

A South Carolina State Library Card will give you borrowing capabilities with the State Library and through SCLENDS, and will also give you access to our online resources and e-books.
