Genealogy Resources at the South Carolina State Library: Genealogy Research at the SC State Library

What does the State Library have?

The State Library has an extensive print collection, the South Carolina Collection, comprised of hundreds of published works on South Carolina history, culture, and literature. Some works in the collection that may be most helpful to genealogists conducting family history research are:

  • community histories
  • county histories
  • city directories
  • military histories
  • memoirs
  • biographies
  • and indexes of select South Carolina genealogy records.

The State Library has a subscription to Newsbank's Historical South Carolina Newspapers. This collection includes access to The State [Columbia, S.C.] 1891-present and several other historical and contemporary SC newspapers. State Library cardholders may access these newspapers from home. If you have a question please contact us at 803-734-8026.

If you wish to access wills, deeds, and other early records, the best genealogy resource in South Carolina is the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
