Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Libraries: Bilingual Storytimes

Resources for library staff serving diverse populations

Celebrate El día de los niños, El día de los libros (Children's Day, Book Day) on April 30!

Celebrate 25 years of Children's Day, Book Day - April 30 & Every Day of The Year

On April 30, 2020, public and school libraries will celebrate Día, a national library program that fosters literacy for all children from all backgrounds. Programs such as Día play a critical role in helping meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population, while also fueling understanding and acceptance.

Día, also known as El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) is a commitment to include and celebrate a variety of cultures every day, year-round, culminating annually on April 30. Día is an enhancement of Children’s Day, which began in 1925. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children’s book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy to found Día.

Three Family Engagement Kits are available for public libraries, with activities and materials in English and Spanish.

These kits gives parents and caregivers ideas on how they can use fun activities at home to support their children's social, emotional, and academic development (SEAD). Library staff may use the kits to host a program or to create take-home activities for their patrons by reproducing the materials. Information in the kit is available in English and Spanish and can be used to facilitate bilingual programs.

The activities and information in the Family Engagement Kits were developed by the Carolina Family Engagement Center.
