How to Read a SuDoc Number

SuDoc numbers may look complex at first, but they follow a logical structure based on the agency and publication type. Each part of the number helps identify where the publication came from and what kind of document it is.

Example:
A 13.150:W 64

A = Department of Agriculture
(The first letter indicates the issuing department)

13 = Forest Service
(The whole number before the dot shows a subordinate agency or office)

.150 = Southern Research Station: General Publications
(The number after the dot represents the publication category or series)

W 64 = Individual publication
(The section after the colon identifies the specific title, issue, or edition—in this case:
“Wildflowers of the Savannah River Site”)
