Facilities Construction and Renovation: Planning

Resources for public library directors, boards, and staff involved in facilities projects

The following resources can assist in the planning stages before the architect begins the design.

Building Program Development

The building program is a document that describes current and future community needs, problems in the existing space, and general requirements for the new library. It lists specifications for each area of the library including lists of furniture and square footage estimates, which can be prepared in cooperation with the architect. A library can prepare a building program at any time before the design stage.

Selecting a Site

Consider what will be a suitable site for the library. Can the library renovate or expand its existing facility? If not, will the library purchase land for a new build or convert an existing structure?

In additional to a building program, a feasibility study can assist in determining whether a site will work for your library.

The documents below provide guidance to consider when selecting a site.
