Brain Teaser Kit #2 Programming Ideas:

Young Children (Ages 3-6)

• Puzzle Playtime – Set up stations with the wooden 3D puzzles, Russian Blocks Puzzle, and Hexagon Puzzle. Kids can rotate through each, solving them with caregiver support.
• Story & Solve – Read a book with a problem-solving theme (e.g., The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires) and then let kids try some simple puzzles.
• Giant Floor Puzzle Challenge – Create large versions of the hexagon or Russian block puzzle on a felt board or magnetic board so kids can work together.

Tweens (Ages 7-12)

• Kanoodle Tournament – Time participants to see who can complete different levels of Kanoodle the fastest.

Skill Toys Programming Ideas:

Young Children (Ages 3-6)

Tweens (Ages 7-12)

Goblin Quest

This is a lighthearted, easy-to-learn tabletop RPG that doesn’t require a Game Master. Players take on the roles of goblins setting out on a chaotic adventure. The main mechanic centers on rolling a d6 to determine the outcome of each action. As players guide their goblins through a multi-stage quest, each roll either advances the story or triggers unpredictable consequences. Success drives the quest forward—while failure often leads to hilarious mishaps.

This isn’t any number-crunching in this simple game, designed by Grant Howitt. Each goblin clutch is given an honorific (surname), an expertise (something their good at), a quirk (something weird about them), a dream (aspirations, go!), and a family heirloom (A worthless trinket dug up near the spawning pits, elevated by a name far more glorious than it deserves.). Each goblin is also given their own “defining feature.”

GM Best Practices

Do: 

• Facilitate, Don’t Dominate
  • Think of yourself as the guide or narrator—not the star of the show.
  • You’re there to help the players tell a story together. They are the stars!
• Set Clear Expectations Prior to Game Play
  • Start with a quick rules explanation and the tone of the game (silly, spooky, adventurous, etc.).
  • Use Session Zero practices when possible (discuss player goals, boundaries, and preferred play style).
• Encourage Participation
  • Prompt quieter players with gentle questions like: “What does your character do next?”
  • Offer multiple ways to contribute—talking, drawing maps, rolling dice.
• Use Safety Tools
  • Introduce the X-card or other tools (Lines & Veils, Open Door Policy).
  • Make it clear that comfort and fun are more important than “sticking to the plot.”
• Improvise Freely
  • You don’t need to know all the rules. Say, “Let’s make a ruling and look it up later.”
  • Embrace creative, off-the-wall player choices—they’re often the best moments.
• Keep Things Moving
  • Don't get bogged down in mechanics. Prioritize storytelling and player engagement.
  • Use quick scene changes and time skips to maintain momentum.

Don’t:

• Don’t Say “No” Too Often
  • Instead of “you can’t do that,” try “you could try—roll to see what happens!”
  • Encourages creativity and agency.
• Don’t Railroad Players
  • Avoid forcing players into a fixed story. Let them solve problems in their own way.
• Don’t Overprepare
  • Focus on situations, not scripts. Players will almost always take the story in a new direction.
  • Be ready to improvise! 
• Don’t Spotlight One Player
  • Rotate attention across the group. Make sure everyone gets a moment to shine.
• Don’t Assume Everyone Has the Same Comfort Level
  • Avoid graphic violence, real-world trauma, or intense themes without a content check-in.
